On April 5, 2011 Japan,
which had been invited to play as a guest in the South American tournament,
have pulled out as the country continues to deal with the fallout
from the March 11 earthquake and subsequent tsunami but on April 14 reversed the decision after getting FIFA support to negotiate the release of Japanese players from European clubs. However on May 17 Japan officially pull out of Copa America. European clubs refusing to release players and the forced rescheduling of the J-League after the earthquake and tsunami given as reasons by JFA president. It was replaced by Costa Rica the same day
