Colombia lined up with a 4-1-4-1 formation with Moreno and Ramos supporting Falcao in more of a 4-3-3 shape when attacking. Moreno and Ramos also frequently switched wings. Gomez reacted to the sending off by sending on Rodallega to play as a second striker and attempt to capitalise on Costa Rica being down to 10 men.

Costa Rica played an unusual formation with a clear back 3, Guzman playing defensive midfield and two full backs. Madrigal and Mora played as the most advanced midfielders. The shape of the team was not consistent, possibly due to Costa Rica bringing an U-23 side to the tournament, Calvo in particular seemed to drift from his position. After the sending off Costa Rica kept the same shape, simply playing one striker up front without Brenes supporting.
